Schools’ Football Week: Kicking Off Literacy Through Sport

From March 31st to April 6th, schools across the UK will celebrate Schools’ Football Week, an initiative that promotes the benefits of football in education. While the focus is on physical activity, it’s also a fantastic opportunity to tie in literacy activities that engage students, especially those who are passionate about sports.

Combining Football and Reading

Integrating football-themed reading materials can captivate reluctant readers and make literacy more appealing. Here’s how:

  • Football Fiction: Introduce students to novels and stories centred around football. Titles like “Football Academy” by Tom Palmer or “Keeper” by Mal Peet can resonate with young football enthusiasts.

  • Player Biographies: Encourage students to read about their favourite footballers. Biographies provide insights into players’ journeys, challenges, and successes, offering both inspiration and reading practice.

  • Match Reports: Analysing and writing match reports can enhance comprehension and writing skills. Students can read reports from recent games and try crafting their own, focusing on structure, vocabulary, and critical analysis.

Football-Themed Literacy Activities

  • Create a Club Newsletter: Have students produce a newsletter for a fictional football club, including articles, interviews, and match previews. This activity fosters creativity and practical writing skills.

  • Design Player Trading Cards: Students can research players and create trading cards that include stats, biographies, and fun facts, combining research skills with concise writing.

  • Debate and Discussion: Host debates on topics like “Who is the greatest footballer of all time?” or “Should technology be used more in football?” This encourages critical thinking and articulate expression.

By linking football to literacy, we can engage students in reading and writing through a subject they are passionate about, making learning both fun and relevant.
