The Challenge of Phonics for Older Pupils Struggling with Reading

Phonics plays a crucial role in helping children decode words and improve reading skills, yet for older pupils still struggling, it can be difficult to access the right resources. Most phonics materials are designed for younger children, often with bright, playful elements that can be off-putting for older students. This mismatch makes it hard for teachers to find age-appropriate resources that can effectively engage older learners.

Additionally, there’s a social stigma surrounding the idea of going “back to basics” with phonics. By the time children reach Key Stage 2 and beyond, there’s an expectation that they should already be proficient readers, leaving those who struggle feeling embarrassed or behind. This pressure can deter pupils from fully engaging in the phonics instruction they need.

To support older students, there needs to be a shift towards creating more mature, age-appropriate phonics resources. Materials should focus on practical, real-world texts and be designed to build confidence rather than highlight gaps in learning. With the right resources and a supportive environment, phonics can be a powerful tool for improving reading skills at any age.
